The School/Junior event, raced in the afternoon, included good 1st VIIIs (including Monkton!), and was an altogether tougher affair than Senior 4. The coach had made it quite clear that the Senior 4 final was the race of the day as far as the crew was concerned, to such an extent that some members of the crew were reluctant to race in the afternoon. They were 'tired', as were all the other crews, they 'had a cold', the glandular fever victim was replaced by the spare man, and the coach and captain swept complaints aside! The race was used as a an opportunity to try a different start (one long stroke, followed by several short, to allow the siezed up man to use arms and back, until legs loosen up). After the race, the crew reckoned that it is worth persevering with this, but in the race itself, we were once gain left at the back. Despite the tiredness, etc., the crew came back through the field, much as in the morning, and finished the race having a good tustle with Eton (2nd VIII) Unfortunately, no times were taken, but Abingdon came 1st, about a length ahead of Bedord, who were 2 lengths head of us. We had the satisfaction of beating Eton 2nd VIII as well as Winchester 2nd VIII. The crew came off the water dissatisfied with the race having rowed badly, some saying the that would have preferred to finish on the high of the Senior 4 final, but the coach was pleased that they had gained more racing experience on an international standard course. It was good to beat Eton II, as well. We don't do it very often. The crew would rather beat Eton I, and they were reminded by the coach that we have done so twice in (his) living memory. Let's go for it, by using all racing opporunities we have. Whingeing won't get experience for us. Coach : J M Bewick | ||||||||||||||||||||||
