Summer term came and the level of training was increased as we concentrated on working towards the National Schools Regatta. On the way we were to go to Birmingham Regatta to gain the necessary regatta experience. All was well until it transpired that no-one wanted to race against us, we were the only womens VIII entered, so we did not go. This meant that we still needed race practice and so we entered Coate Water Regatta, despite it being very close to the National School's and our soaking last year. All went well and our times in training were excellent and we were ready. Unfortunately the weather was not and though the rain kept off the wind did not. This meant that the regatta was soon running late and we were on the water for over an hour waiting for our first race which changed, while we waited, from a heat for two crews to a final for three, us, Cheltenham Ladies J16 and Southamton University. Thus after some difficulty for all three crews in attaching to the stake boats without being blown round by the wind we were all ready for the Novice VIII final and GO! We were up, due to a good start and then at stroke five, BANG! For some reason Emma's Lifejacket had inflated and she had to row the rest of the race wearing an inflated jacket. This of cause was very difficult we dropped behind, but there was no giving up and we finally managed to finish second to Southampton University, a good result considering. After some chat there was a determination to show our worth in the Senior 4 event, where we were drawn against ... Southampton University, but first a wait of at least four hours. Then .. Our second problem, Vicky
turned while standing on the bank and collapsed in agony as she had
dislocated both her knees, but in particular the left one. This meant the St
John's Ambulance and after a doctor had pushed the knee cap back a trip to
Swindon A&E and X-rays, crutches and a splint later Vicky and PGB, with
slightly flattened hands (Vicky had to have something to grip in her agony),
were on their way back to Monkton. Meanwhile the race, Florence took Vicky's
place and Matt Hurley coxed. The race went well and we were able to hold on
till half-way, but fitness and age told and Southampton finished well in
front. An unfortunate day, but we will come back and we will demonstrate
that with the full crew we are a force to be reckoned with. I must also take
this opportunity to again thank our parental support without which we would
be a much lesser force.
