Girls' Rowing

This has been a year in which the girls have shown themselves to be an enthusiastic branch of the Boat Club. With much perseverence by the masters and fellow club members, the determination of the girls has got them through the year. At the beginning of the season, winning a regatta seemed a long way off, but during the two terms, hard training and crew spirit have brought a passing thought into a realistic achievement.

There were sufficient number of girls to form two 'eights', both of which participated in Head races. The 'A' eight were successful in winning at Bristol Ariel Head, with the 'B' crew not far behind.

At the start of the Summer term, came the arrival of the regatta season and this in its turn brought definite changes; due to lack of events for eights, the crews were divided into fours and competed at several regattas with varying degrees of success. The 'A' four achieved an excellent result by winning their first regatta at Wallingford. Although the other crews were less obviously successful, they all rowed to the best of their ability. The height of all their efforts was to be represented at National Schools Regatta by their 'A' crew. Two crews rowed as Monkton Bluefriars at Worcester, during the exeat, and at Bedford at the end of the Summer term.

In the face of the tough opposition from university crews, it was realised that it is not the winning but the competing that should and in fact did, bring about the most satisfaction. Many thanks go to Ian Marr and Mike Chilcott for their time and effort and also to the rest of the Boat Club for all their support.
