Girls Rowing   J.A.Crawford

Enthusiasm has always been the main strength of the girls when battling for recognition in this male dominated sport. This year we can claim to have equalled the determination of previous girl rowers and to have set challenges for the next generation.

Two eights were maintained for most of the season and the training undertaken involved numerous runs and Wednesday evening sessions on the Multi Gym. The rewards came mainly in the the Head Races, where both crews rowed to the best of their ability and attained creditable results. Because of the lack of events for eights, the A crew was split into two fours, the more experienced of which competed at Senior C level. This meant that there were equal opportunities for success for both crews, and an impressive total of five out of six divisions were won at three Head Haces. The highlight for all the A eight must have been winning their division in the Schools' Head Hace in London as this was the first time their category had been included in the race and the crew joined a select band of Monktonian national event winners.

Several regattas were attended in the Summer term, and although none was won, there were several close races against strong University and club crews. The girls showed their enjoyment of competing by sending a four to row as Monkton Bluefriars at Worcester and also at Kingston.

The experience of Mr. Oxlade will be greatly missed. He gave much of his time helping the girls at school and providing transport to the events. Also many thanks to Mike Chilcott and David Bewick for their relentless coaching, and to the rest of the Boat Club to tolerated the presence of the girls.
