Second Eight   W.O.H.

It was very interesting to watch the senior trials and to pick a SECOND EIGHT without knowing any of the boys concerned, or their rowing histories. All one could do was look for enthusiasm: the river in January is not a place for the faint-hearted. The 2nd once chosen, shook down well together, with no distinct captain but maturely led by Stroke and Seven, both of whom had previous 2nd VIII experience. What was most impressive - was the desire to work hard: the craw had to be kept in check rather than driven and its keenness was boundless. This became apparent quickly on the water, where training outings were characterised by determination and efficiency. The crew did not relish head races but performed satisfactorily, its best row being at Bristol Ariel, where the rowing was dogged and the coxing superb. The worst was at the Schools Head; two men were in the san, and three more not fully fit. In spite of game substitution by two former 2nd VIII colours, the crew was tired and flat... and it showed.

The regatta season saw a crew determined to go fast. Morale was high, the crew stripping down and preparing its own boat for re-varnishing. With more crews on the river, the inevitable congestion and lack of launches made for time wastage Infuriating to crew and coach alike. Only by an agressive policy of "first come, first served" was the crew able to ensure it was coached, and I feel some sympathy for stranded junior boys. More frustrations occured. Though we did our best to make the Dick Hole look presentable, it remains a fact that the 2nd VIII was unbeaten by any crew with a boat less than ten years younger than its own. Fine gutty rows were of no avail and I was surprised that morale held up so well: that it did is attributable to a group of people as determined to enjoy as they were to win. They deserved better luck.
