Second Eight   WOH

The season started in the traditional vile January conditions, with the trials for 1st and 2nd VIII's. The spirit and determination showed by all involved was remarkable. None of us will forget the trials race at Saltford with two perfectly matched crews. Once the decision had been made, the 2nd VIII quickly settled down, rejoicing in its new boat, worthily named the Richard Blake. There were now no excuses for not being competitive - but then, none were needed. In the Head Race season the crew was unbeaten in its class in local races and performed well on the Thames. The crew loved performing and always looked good on the water. They never threatened the 1st VIII in terms of speed, but frequently looked smarter and better together. (It should be pointed out that were it not for the turning of the tide at the School's Head, they would not have been so close to the 1st VIII's time).

It was therefore with heads held high that the crew approached the Regatta season. Again they performed well. They took no pots, but beat a number of very good crews. Their best row, perhaps, was at Reading Town.

Overall, the 2nd VIII of 1986 was a memorable crew: fast, smart and very professional both on and off the water. It was a pleasure to coach them.
