The Third Four, or rather the First Four, began life as a crew only in the Summer Term. The crew was entirley new; its future looked shaky. However, with the highly experienced cox (probably one of the best on the river) they were quickly encouraged. Basic techniques were re-taught by invaluable tuition from Mr Steggles, and within a very short time the crew began to feel and look confident. Bystanders often remarked that the the four looked very tidy and impressive; many were surprised at just how quickly so much had been learnt and put into practice. Course times were set and beaten repeatedly, for here was a crew that was keen and ambitious, but most importantly enjoying rowing. Such was their eagerness to improve that it was known for them to be boating at about five in the morning. The crew was rewarded for its efforts by a clean sweep victory at Shearwater. Given two terms, who knows what they might have achieved?
