Bristol Docks Head Race

The Docks head race was held the day after the Mortlake to Putney procession. We entered because it was a good race last year, but with some hesitation as it might have been an anti- climax after London. The clocks went back on the Sunday morning, but luckily our division was in the afternoon, so all had a good lie in before meeting up in the docks at lunch time. The row through the city centre was followed by a party of parents and supporters, who sped through deserted streets t see glimpses of the crew from time to time. We started third (despite coming Head last year), and because of the difficult bridges and corners, there were large gaps between crews. It was impossible for the crew to know how it was doing, but the coach reckoned they were about a second or two up on the best opposition with two minutes to go. The crew rowed powerfully to the end, and did win overall with two seconds to spare. The main opposition was a better than usual crew from Bradford on Avon Bristol University were left some way behind, and the Avon crew which had beaten us at Arid did not have their best international on board. This was a good victory.
