The Boat Club

The Michaelmas Term saw plenty of activity at the river: newboys were introduced to rowing; a girls' crew was formed; and a band of more experienced oarsmen and scullers trained steadily, concentrating on watermanship rather than working up to racing speed. Consequently the results obtained in the Monkton Bluefrairs Head Race and at Wycliffe were not at all noteworthy! Two girls' fours worked hard and won medals at Wycliffe, but were then afflicted with illness and missed several races during the Lent Term. A few continued to go out in pairs and sculls, but there were not enough to form a permanent crew in the Summer. It is recorded with regret that the House Bumping Races did not take place at all; we tried to find a few days free of other activities, but failed to do so. As always, much rowing activity took place away from Monkton and out of term time. We owe thanks to many who gave hospitality to crews during the year; these include Thames Rowing Club, Emanuel School, Trent Rowing Club, Chigwell School, Mr and Mrs David Houghton, the Rymer family, not to mention parents and relations of oarsmen. To all these, we give warm thanks.
