Bedford

The crew had recovered from the disappointment of the Henley result in time for a few days' training and racing at Bedford. The weather changed dramatically just before we went and every day of our stay (in the garden of Bedford Modern School boathouse) was spent in glorious sunshine. The Thursday training outing was rough, but by Friday the crew was more settled; after an early morning outing, a very hot afternoon was spent punting in Cambridge. A training outing in the evening, followed by a barbecue rounded off an enjoyable day. The first race over the 1000m course was againt London Rowing Club; our start was poor, but even so a length lead was increased confidently towards the end of the course. The following round was against Worcester, this turned out to be a fine match, with the two crews level for the first two minutes; then we had the disadvantage of the bend (yes, many crews felt that the course had been unfortunately buoyed), and Worcester edged ahead to a half length victory.

The following day at the sprint regatta (held on a course of 600m), we had three excellent races. The first was against Bedford, who stayed with us until the weir, then made mistakes which are fatal in sprint races; the second round was easier; then the final was against the same Worcester crew who had beaten us on the bend the day before. The warm-up before the race was excellent (the best of the year, according to members of he crew), and everyone was keyed up for their last race together. All went well, with an excellent start, but Worcester fought all the way and kept our winning margin to half a length during a race when our rate never fell below 42. This was an excellent note on which to finish the season, and the crew was delighted that four crew families had travelled a long way to share in their success.
