This season was not without its problems and the crew was unable to settle down to serious training until after half term. We were also beset by injury problems which meant that we had to row with a newly re-organised crew for out first Head race. Our performances at Head races were very disappointing and the crew lacked the stamina and cohesiveness required to do well. We showed some potential on internal Head races, however, when we rowed well but faded badly on the big occasions.
The Summer Term, however, was a completely different story, with the crew welding itself into a very determined unit. They thrived on the shorter regatta courses with other crews alongside. Our first regatta at Coate Water was a great encouragement for the crew and at the end of a good day's racing we were able to claim victories over 2nd VIlls from Radley, Pangbourne and Bryanston and also Radley and Eton 3rd VIlls. In the final we were beaten into 2nd place by a very skilful Abingdon 2nd VIII. We went to our next regatta at Birmingham with greatly restored confidence and won the Senior III final, beating a club crew from Pengwern, who were coxed by O.M. T.J.D'Oyly. We were also entered for the School/Junior VIlls event where we met a very successful Pangbourne College 1st VIII, who were rather too good for us, but we enjoyed making them work to keep ahead of us. At the Thames Valley Regatta we encountered Abingdon 2nd VIII again and we had hoped to give them a much better race this time. Unfortunately, we were hurried onto the start with insufficient time to warm up and consequently we didn't row to our full potential. This was overall a successful season and our win at Birmingham gave one of our crew his first tankard in five years of rowing. It showed, however, the rewards of perseverance not only to the individual, but to the crew who kept going after a series of disappointments in the Lent Term. They fully deserved their half-colours.
