The Second Eight   BGN

The 2nd VIII were a very cohesive and competent crew and concentration, effort and enthusiasm were the keys to their success. Balance was quickly achieved in the Lent Tenn, helped largely by our boat Richard Blake, which proved popular with the crew and although rather old gave a sound platform for hard work. In the Head of the River races at Bristol Docks, Bristol Ariel and Avon County the crew distinguished themselves by winning their divisions and at Avon County we missed going Head by one second to Bryanston 1st VIII. The Schools' Head was a disappointment, however, and we appeared to be overcome by the occasion and didn't produce our best rowing.

During the Summer Term the crew worked very hard over short courses and M.D.Evans as stroke gave the crew a fine rhythm on the stride. Within two weeks we had equalled last year's 500m average time and we went on to produce in training some very good course times. R.V.Moody captained the crew from the No.6 seat and the amount of water on the end of his blade was a fine example to the rest of the crew. His encouragement and enthusiasm were extremely valuable in welding the crew into a formidable unit. The highlight of the term was our win in the 3rd Division at Avon County Regatta when we beat both Canford and Bryanston 2nd VIM and Radley 3rd VIII. On this result the crew thoroughly deserved their half- colours. With examinations occurring earlier it was difficult to keep the crew together until the end of term. A coxless pair was able to enjoy the water and raced at Thames Valley Regatta where they lost by half a length to an experienced Shiplake crew.
