Girls' Rowing has continued to flourish during 1991/92. A new influx of Lower Sixth Formers took up the challenge in the Michaelmas term and it was not long before two Fours, an Eight and a Pair were to be seen haunting our reach of the Avon. As the term progressed the Lower Sixth Form group gained in confidence whilst the Senior crew prepared for the longer distance racing to come in the Lent Term. The Fours Head in London provided a formidable challenge for the latter crew - four and a quarter miles from Mortlake to Putney. Five hundred crews entered the event and Monkton Combe finished in amongst the other WS3+ crews. Later in the term, the Lower Sixth crew acquitted itself well in an invitation event at the Bluefriars Small Boats Head, beating two of the three WN8+ crews from Bristol University. In the Lent term the Senior crew was augmented by those who had returned from the Hockey fields of the Michaelmas term, thus forming a Senior VIII which rowed in three Head Races: Henley Schools'; Avon County Schools' and the Schools Head in London. The Lower Sixth crew also competed in the latter two events. In every case the crews raced with vigour and enthusiasm, the most encouraging result being a tenth place in London where the Senior crew beat 'A' VIIIs from, amongst others, Putney High as well as 'B' crews from King's Canterbury and St Pauls Girls' School. It was at this event, near Hammersmith Bridge, that an oar loom broke in the Lower Sixth crew resulting in the somewhat dubious honour, in the circumstances, of a photographic appearance in Rowing magazine. Unfortunately, success eluded the crews during the Summer term. Regattas seemed to coincide with illness, appalling weather, substitutions and all manner of problems. A Senior IV reached the final of its event at Avon County Schools regatta only to have the race called off because of gale force winds and rain, and our event at Coate Regatta was cancelled because of a lack of entries. However, both crews put in good performances at Bridgnorth, losing to the eventual winners of their respective events, the Novices being eliminated in a healthy tussle with a crew from Minerva - our next door neighbours on the Avon. It is a credit to all the crews that they managed to retain a positive and enthusiastic disposition throughout all these difficulties and disappointments, and I am confident that those crews who remain with us as the new academic year begins will soon be rewarded for all their efforts. Finally, mention should be made of Sarah Hepworth, captain of the Senior group, who has done so much to encourage the oarswomen and who has lead throughout the year by a fine example, and thanks expressed to BGN, DRJ and JMB for their invaluable help in the coaching of the crews.
