Second (Novice) IV   DRJ

This is not so much a story of meteoric progress and the dynamic physical success of titans, with many cups and 'pots' to crown a season of top class endeavour. Rather, it is a story of a tremendous struggle, against all the odds, of four novice Sixth form oarsmen, three in their first season, and a novice cox...all with plenty of brawn, but 'developing' finesse and technique, rowing in a class often peopled by large, physically mature men well into their twenties.... However, that's enough of excuses! There were undoubtedly several high-spots of great achievement during the season, the most notable unquestionably being a quite sterling row in the Schools Head Race, in which the crew managed to go up two positions, and would have passed a third crew, but for a slight erring out of the stream caused by both excitement and inexperience. Our cox, Aneirin Holmes, has shown considerable and commendable restraint, coupled with initiative and some brio. He has the ability to learn quickly with good humour! David Lewis, our second Welshman, all seven feet of him, stroked the crew vigorously till early on in the regatta season, when our Solomon islander (and you should see what they can do with an oar!) Peter Boorne changed seats with him and we tried a new tempo and regime! Where poise and bladework were wanting, raw muscle and power were provided in abundance by Michael (call me 'Arnie') Minchin and the supremely fit and unstintingly hard working Philip Knowles. The crew found learning new ways hard - with more unanimity of movement, of coordination and stronger back positions, we would have flown! Having said that, it is my view that in eight years' coaching, I have never been with such a well humoured, selfless, hard working group, so willing to listen and try themselves, and to help other crews, to raise their morale and, being humble, not to indulge in 'put downs'. Good losers - yes! But gentlemen, thoughtful, an example to follow and a pleasure to be with. We enjoyed some tremendous times together, at Wallingford, at Bewdley and at Bridgnorth to name but a few! Next season, with consolidation, they will go far!
