Occasional Notes Chris Morris We were very sad to hear that Chris, who rowed in the 1st VIII in 1972 and 1973, was murdered in Kenya, where he had spent most of his life engaged on work which was of lasting value to that country. JMB and the Captain of Boats attended Chriss Memorial Service in Sussex. There were many happy memories of Chris at that Service. The following extract from the Minute Book will remind his crew-mates of him - a powerful, determined and unflappable character: Chris stroked the VIII at Bedford Regatta in 1972: . . . at the bend, Oxford City, with the inside, managed to draw level, and at the Town Bridge they were leading by length. Stroke, with characteristic coolness was under-pipping Oxford by about 5 str/minute, while JMB on the bank was wondering if we knew how to put the rating up. . . . . . at the Weir Bridge - Take her Home landmark - cox called for a spurt. There was an amazingly powerful finish, in no small measure due to the coolness and determination of Chris Morris at Stroke. The verdict was 3 feet to us. This was a tremendous race. e recall with sadness that the cox (Paul Ashton) and stroke of the 1972 VIII have died young, both in tragic circumstances. - Ed.]
