The Bluefriars Dinner 1988
Bluefriars Dinner 1998 Our guest will be David Prichard, who coached at Monkton for many years until 1969. Crews of the 1951 and 1952 vintage, as well as the 1st VIII and DCMP's 2nd VIII of 1964 are particularly encouraged to attend. The 1951 crew will no doubt share memories of the great Boathouse Fire of that year in which 13 boats were lost. On a brighter note, they will recall reaching the semi-final at Henley. The 1952 crew will celebrate once again their magnificant achievement - reaching the final of the Princess Elizabeth Cup at Henley. According to The Times : One of the most thrilling races of the day was the Princess Elizabeth Cup, in which Radley beat Monkton Combe by a bare half-length in 7 min. dead. Up to the mile post the crews were level, and Radley then began to draw away to about a length lead. In the last 100 yards Monkton Combe put in a stupendous spurt and reduced this to half a length, and might have caught up in another few yards. No words can speak too highly of the Rev W Llewellyn-Jones, who in the 1930s, raised Monkton Combe to pre-eminence in rowing and has now done the same for Radley.• [[This was long before the Editor's time, but he well remembers WJLL-J's funeral at which the Masters in Charge of Rowing and the Captains of both Monkton and Radley were present to pay their respects to this great coach of both clubs (and incidentally he coached BSM at Oxford)] All friends of Bluefriars are welcome at the dinner, including OMs of other vintages and parents of current members of MCSBC
