1958-1998
1958 John Ducker rowed for Oxford Henley : We raced Oundle at 2.15 - first race after lunch. At the start, we went up a few feet but in the second minute Oundle gradually drew away and it was here that the race was lost. At the Barrier, they had a length, but a 10 took us to within half a length. For a moment Oundle looked rattled, but they settled down again and from then onwards were never in danger. They were 1¼ lengths up at the ¾ Mile, and although Monkton drove her home from the Mile Post and for a time closed the gap to ¾ length, Oundle went away up the Enclosures to win by 2 lengths in the fast time of 7 min 12 sec. [Boat Club Minute book - Charles Grimwade] 1968 10th July : River in flood, therefore no rowing on the river for the rest of term. The crew leaves for Cambridge on Sunday 14th. Copenhagen - 16th-20th July : .. Sunday morning was spent relaxing in the shade and watching the racing. We had an early lunch, around 12 o'clock, and then waited for one forty five when we launched for the race. The wind was fairly strong so it was to our advantage that we had trained in really strong wind. Going out to the start we did a couple of starts and tens. Both were about as expected and our hopes were high. There was a four skuller [sic] with women oarsmen [sic] who had a false start so at least we new [sic] if ... [at this point the Captain's log fizzles out !] 1978 The Centenary of the Boat Club A History of Monkton Combe School Boat Club - 1878-1978 was written by Dick Hole. [Copies still available!] Celebrations were held at MCS on 24th and 25th June. Eights VIIIs of OMs went on the water. They included Olympians and Blues as well as many other ex-MCS oarsmen. Our Guest at the Celebration dinner (attended by about 200) was Dr. W.G.R.M.Laurie. He accepted the invitation to be present only after he had been assured by an exchange of letters with JMB that MCSBC continued to aim at the top. WGRML: "...whatever you or I or other older people might feel, there are young people with ambition to reach for the top. If, as a deliberate decision, it is decided to aim only for less than the top, I am sure that this will inevitably be communicated to the boys. I fear that such a decision cannot but lead to a deteriorating standard," JMB :" . . I am sure you are right. Do say anything you feel needs saying at the dinner..." He did, and was a great inspiration to a generation of Monkton oarsmen. Two members of the 1978 1st VIII, John Davison and Richard Ireland, went on to represent Great Britain after they had left school.
