"Over to the Umpire at the Start".
(One would then have expected to hear the Umpire preparing the crews and starting them, but the ducks took over, and "Quack, Quack, Quack" was all that was heard throughout the Enclosure. The crowd smiled, and perhaps a faint titter was heard, but Henley Commentaries are of course faultless, so the ducks and the Umpire were faded out without comment or ruffled feathers.)
"Here comes Monkton Comprehensive School with a French lass on board. I understand she doesn't speak very good English. It's an old man's crew." (The 'lass' was Barbara Girard from Nantes, who speaks good English, and the crew was on the young side.)
Steve Williams was Sportsman of the Year at Oxford Brookes University.
Steve Williams and Rowley Douglas were mentioned regularly on TV and radio, as well as in the press, on the Internet and on Ceefax during the season.
It has not been easy to catch up with Steve this summer. After his Henley success, he went to the World Championships in Candada, then direct to Australia for a squad training camp. During a brief return to the UK he underwent a minor operation before going to Spain in a squad of 20 for further training before Christmas. The GB heavyweight Olympic rowing team will consist of only 14 athletes.
