Monkton Bluefriars Charitable Trust -Trustees
The Trustees are : John Clark (Chairman); Rosemary Coates (Secretary), Julian Bewick (Treasurer), Jane Perry, Rowley Douglas MBE, Steve Williams, and Robert Quayle who became a Trustee in July 2002.
Accounts
The Trust accounts for the year September 2001 to August 2002 have not been finalised, but approximate figures are:

Grants
Income
from Investments£2,000
Gift Aid(regular donations, etc.)£4,600
Other Gifts£2,000
Tax reclaimed £1,500
To Monkton £4,100
To others £1,000
Investment
To CAF Fund £5,000

Grants

The 2001/2002 grants to Monkton included £2,700 in bursaries and £1,400 for a set of four pairs of sculling blades to go with a new boat bought by the school. Grants totalling £1,000 were made to help with rowing expenses for juniors in the Bath area.

It should be noted that the average grant to Monkton in the past four years has been nearly £6,500 and to other clubs about £4,000, making a total grant per year of over £10,000. The grants made this year have been lower than usual because of exceptionally large grants made last year.

Donations

The donations through Gift Aid are made both by OM supporters of Bluefrairs and by members of local clubs. If you would like to contribute to our funds, please look at www.bluefriars.org.uk, where you can request Standing Order and Gift Aid forms or make donations online with a CAF Charity card. Donations by Give as You Earn - Payroll Giving

We have just received our first donation from the Give as You Earn scheme. It came to us out of the blue, so thank you - whoever you are! The Give as You Earn Scheme is a good method to use to give to any charity, because much of the paperwork is dealt with centrally, minimising the work both for the donor and for the charity. All you need to is sign the appropriate form which is available from your employer.

An example of the arithmetic involved: If you were to give £10 a month under the scheme, it is taken from your pay before tax, and the Government adds a bonus £1, so the charity receives £11. For the charity to receive this amount out of your taxed income, you would have to earn just over £14 before tax as a basic rate taxpayer and over £18 as a higher rate taxpayer. So, if you decide to give to a charity this way, be as generous as you can, because the charity cannot claim further tax. [Sorry if that sounds a bit complicated! - Ed]

We are registered with www.givenow.org which enables you to give online.

Going, Going, Gone

Items of interest to current members of the Boat Club, parents and OMs

If you would like any of the items mentioned below, please write to the Secretary, or order online at www.bluefriars.org.uk/order.htm

Lapel Pins

A Bluefriar lapel pin is being made to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Boat Club in 2003. Pins will be given to all regular donors to the Bluefriars Trust as well as to all current members of the school who represent MCSBC in 2003. Other friends of Monkton rowing may buy pins at £2 each.

Prints of the Aqueduct

Some years ago, we produced a limited edition print of a painting of the Aqueduct. Many of these prints were sold to friends of Monkton rowing. We have in stock a small number of signed and numbered prints, which are available unframed at £25 each, or framed from £55. The artist died recently, so when the signed copies have gone, there will be no more. First come, first served, or put it off and be disappointed. We also have in stock a large number of unsigned prints, and these are available for £5 each.

1st VIII Scarves

The last batch of traditional 1st VIII scarves was made about ten years ago. Since then, several people have asked for scarves, but we can supply them only if we have at least a dozen orders. They are not cheap! The price is expected to be about £60 if we buy a new batch.
1st VIII Blazers

We have a small stock of 1st VIII blazers which are used by the current Monkton crew at Henley and occasionally at other times in the year. No-one has bought his own blazer for several years, and as with the scarves, we need to order a batch of a dozen or so to make the order worthwhile. Bluefriars would order 2 or 3 to keep for the current crew. The cost will be at least £150 each if we get the blazers made in UK. We are looking into cheaper sources in the Far East.
Bluefriars Ties

We have these in stock, - £10 each. The most recent design is slightly wider and longer than the traditional one.

1st VIII Colours Ties We have these in stock, - £10 each.

Bluefriars Sweatshirts Plain blue with a small bluefriar logo - £20.

Coffee Mugs We usually have coffee mugs in stock - good Christmas stocking fillers. £2.50 each or £12 for 6.

Umbrellas We have a few in stock - £20.

History of Monkton Combe School Boat Club 1978-1978 - R.D.Hole (hardback 86pp. We still have copies in stock - £2 each

www.bluefriars.org.uk

The Bluefriars website has been used for the past year or two to publicise results for the annual Monkton Bluefriars Head Race, which was founded in 1970 and reaches its 29th race in November 2002.

In 2002, the use of the site increased when we started publishing details of regatta entries a few days before each race for the benefit of parents and other supporters. A few race reports were also posted on the site within a day or two of the event, and these were eagerly read by crews and supporters alike. This service, along with more details about how to reach regatta sites will be continued in 2003. Look at the Monkton Combe School Boat section on the site, then follow the links to the calendar and the particular race.

The site is also being upgraded with more information about MCSBC and Monkton Bluefriars. It would be good to include a "News" section, but this will depend on some news reaching us via the contact form on the site, or by old fashioned mail or phone call.

OM Rowing
There has been a dearth of information about OM rowing this year, despite continual goading from the editor for news.

Steve Williams continues with his rowing career in the GB Senior Team, and his Four won a silver medal at the World Championships. They were very disappointed, having been World Champions last year. Alex Partridge rowed in the young GB VIII which delighted everyone by reaching the final in Seville. At U23 level, Henry Bailehache-Webb represented GB. Nearer to home, Joel Chase has been secretary of the University of West of England Boat Club.
