Anniversary Dinner Conundrum   by David and Mary Williams

The GB team spends time at high altitude in training camps; this puzzle, passed on to us by Steve's parents, David and Mary Williams, whiled away some hours during rest periods.

Almost everyone had been ferried across to Temple Island for this year's very spcial Bluefriars dinner. The launch then broke down, leaving the four guests-of-honour stranded on the wrong bank. However, all was not lost, as there was a tub scull with a cox's seat on the bank, but with only one pair of sculls. The Double World Cup holder (A) could do the distance in one minute; the Under 23 Champion (B) could do it in two minutes, the olympic cox (C) could do it in five minutes and the octogenarian olympian (D) could do it in ten minutes. Everyone was waiting for their arrival.

After a few moments thought, the Chairman said everything would be all right - he could spin out the notices for 17 minutes, but not a moment longer. Was he right, and if so, how did they do it? Rules of the game: The boat can carry a lone sculler, or a sculler and a coach. If there are two on board, the slower one sculls, while the faster one steers and coaches. No other means of transport allowed.
