Coate Water Regatta 2005   Rupert Johnstone-Burt

A Crew member's account of a very wet day!

The day started when the whole of the boat club who were racing got onto the coach at Monkton at 7:00 in the morning. When we arrived at the regatta we all got off the bus in single file and made our way towards the tent we had to put our stuff under. Our boat 'Spider' was easy to assemble and we had some help from other crews.

After a long wait we were finally called onto the water and the freezing and wet weather hit us straight away. We had a few warm up strokes and then eventually rowed to the start line. By this time we were all really nervous and tense then suddenly the race began. About six strokes in, somebody caught a crab with their oar (because of the weather shaking the boat around) which hit another oar that flew out of the gate and hit me on the head. We were then unable to move, so we watched the two other crews row off into the distance. Later we found out that the crew we were losing to had passed into a different lane and had therefore been disqualified.

The crew we were beating went on to win the race. We were all pretty annoyed by this but altogether we had a good experience.

Finally, the third form rowers and coaches owe a huge thank you to Mr Bossom for all he has done for us over the years, as he will go on to coach the 4th form next season. We all wish him the best of luck.
