A trip back to the river - June 2007   Charles Davison

On returning to Monkton for a row after 37 years, two questions came to mind: Why? And, what was it all about?

Why return? was easy. An opportunity to meet old school chums/crewmates, but also more importantly to say thank-you to our coach who made those years so rewarding and memorable.

Perhaps more difficult to explain. What was it all about?

Rowing is a team sport to surpass most other team sports. Well known to be one of the most challenging tests of strength and endurance, it is perhaps also one of the best sports for developing and testing a team. Moulding disparate crew members into a cohesive and effective unit prepared to push to the limits and beyond in order to beat the opposition. We learnt that with shared commitment and determination the seemingly impossible can be achieved.

I think most of us have used the lessons learnt on the river many times during our subsequent careers. It was a unique opportunity and I am grateful to all involved: crewmates and coaches. In many ways the time on the river was just as important as the time spent in the classroom. Thank you.
