This is the captain's report on the Hereford race:
Most of the crew started off in the minibus after an early lunch. On the M4 the object in question broke its fan belt. After going to Filton and not being able to find a replacement, we proceeded with me just pouring water into the boiling radiator. Eventually arrived just in time for race in the final of the 1st VIIIs Cup against The King's School Worcester. JMB and RJK [The Head Master] missed the race because they were out looking for us. Our problem was that we were fatigued after being in the minibus so long and never really woke up.
We got straight into the boat and paddled up to the start. Worcester were there waiting for us. They had already beaten Shrewsbury II. from the very first stroke this felt like a bad row and there was a lack of power and punch and a stride never developed at all. Despite this, we went up and maintained a lead of two- thirds of a length before we pushed it up at the end to win by 1 lengths. No one was happy with the quality of the row and it was very lucky that we came across a crew proved to be much weaker than ourselves.
