These included: 6th at Schools Head (2½ seconds faster would have placed the crew third), HORR 55th/350, Wins: SB VIII Hereford, SC VIII Metropolitan (Report below):

There were nine crews entered for this event. In the first race, we met Imperial College II, and City Orient We won, with some energy left for the final.

The final was between Monkton, Quintin and Emanuel II. The tide was almost fully in by this stage, so the race was rowed up from the River Wandle to London Rowing Club. There was a nasty wind against the tide, so there were plenty of waves, and conditions were difficult.

Monkton soon had a lead off the start, and by the time they got to Putney Bridge, this was about one length over Emanuel, with Quintin close behind. The Emanuel coach had just congratulated the Monkton coach on a good race when an enormous wave hit Monkton, and we stopped almost dead. Emanuel shot up to within a few feet of our bows, then they suffered from the same wave, and retreated again. Quintin were then swamped by the same wave, and slowed down completely. All three crews reached the finish, but were soaked from head to foot. The water was up to the *clogs in the boat. Certainly a race to be remembered.

After the end of the summer term the crew went to Athlone Regatta, where they won junior and 'maiden' eights. Junior is roughly equivalent to senior B, and maiden is roughly equivalent to senior C.

[* At that time, oarsmen wore gym shoes (trainers) in the boat, and these fitted in fixed wooden clogs. At Monkton, we moved towards allowing more flexibility at the ankle by adding hinges to the clogs. - JMB]
