33 wins, 18 second places and 12 third places, three fastest crews at head races, a semi-final place at National Schools Regatta and appearances at women's and men's Henley make for impressive reading for the 2008/2009 season; and with every year group tasting success it can only mean Monktonians are hungry for more. This year has seen the best on show since my arrival 5 years ago and I am pleased to say that 98% of my 5 year development plan has come to fruition. I set out to provide an environment that allows young people to develop, enjoy and reach beyond their potential. This of course is how the BC has always been but the focus had been much more on this aspect of late. No matter what sex, size, technical ability or fitness, the BC is a place that can nurture you and develop you not only to be a competent oarsman/woman but also to become a well adjusted and determined man or woman.

The BC has again provided opportunities for people outside Monkton to try our fantastic sport. The Ashfield YOI link goes from strength to strength; our links with other schools and clubs grow as our reputation begins to move further afield.

The challenge is now to look to improve once again. How can we do this? By pushing the boundaries and asking questions of ourselves each day. I live by this motto: "If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got". Am I happy to get the same results? No, I want to challenge myself and all the crews to look for more and try to push beyond 2009.

It is an exciting 12 months ahead with many challenges but ones I am sure that Monkton Combe School BC can respond to.
