A reminder Bluefriars' funds can benefit every time you buy goods from Amazon, but only if you go via the link on the Bluefriars website. Several people have said that they use Amazon, but often forget to go via Bluefriars.

The process has now been made easier. All you have to do is add the page http://www.bluefriars.org.uk/amazon.htm to your browser bookmarks. Then use the bookmark each time you want to buy from Amazon.

Tom Mildinhall Prize The prize, which is awarded annually, was given in memory of Tom Mildinhall, who was killed in action in Iraq. The three winners so far are Sam Wall, Coralie Chapman and Henry Page.

Calendar A 2010 calendar is being prepared, and should be out in good time for Christmas. See the Bluefriars website for details, price and how to order. Profits will go to Bluefriars funds.

Bluefriars Trustees There have been changes to the list of Bluefriars trustees since the publication of the last newsletter.

Robert Quayle finished his stint as a trustee (from 2002) and then as chairman (from 2003 until the end of 2008). Robert was the driving legal force behind the founding of the Trust in 1996, when he guided us through the complex process of setting up a trust deed. We think Bluefriars was the first trust of its type, and its trust deed has since been used as a template by other charities.

The other trustees expressed their gratitude to Robert at a dinner at Leander Club. They were grateful for all his work on behalf of the Trust, particularly his wise guidance as chairman and his constant trumpeting of the cause of rowing at Monkton, where he was a governor.

New Trustees

Godfrey Bishop coached Junior Colts, Colts, 2nd VIII and 1st VIII between 1988 and 1997 and was master in charge of rowing from 1995 to 1996, succeeding Lindsey Reynolds and preceding the first director of rowing, David Conington. He has recently been helping JMB in Bluefriars administrative matters.

Alex Partridge was Captain of Boats in 1998 and 1999, winning a bronze medal (in 1998) and a silver medal (in 1999) at the World Junior Championships. He went on to row at Oxford Brookes, winning a Gold in the World U23 Championships in 2000, and a Silver in 2001, when he also won a bronze at senior level. In the GB VIII, he was a finalist in 2002 and won bronze at the 2003 World Championships in Milan. He was unlucky to miss the 2004 Olympic Games because of illness; he became World Champion in coxless fours in 2005, 2006 and 2009, and won a silver medal in the eight at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Fergus Murison rowed in the second eight at Monkton, and went on to row for Isis, for Leander Club and for England. For several years he and his wife have hosted the Monkton crew for Henley. His career was in banking, but he has recently taken up teaching mathematics at Great Marlow School, where he has founded a new rowing club which already has nearly 100 members. Bluefriars, MCSBC and several other clubs have helped this fledgeling club by providing a stock of boats to get them going. [Monkton has been similarly helped in the past - when the boathouse burned down in 1951 and a large number of boats was lost. Eton Vikings gave us 'Viking', the clinker eight which some readers will remember. (See 2003 Newsletter)] The other trustees were delighted that Fergus agreed to become chairman of the trustees, taking over from Robert Quayle in January 2009.
